You will find something more in woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters. ~St. Bernard

1 Fish 2 Fish… 1000 Fish!

Whether you like to fish or not, this is a fun story. A man named Steve Wozniak now holds a unique title-the person who has caught 1000 different kinds of fish probably the most ever!  It’s also interesting to note that fishing is not his full time job. He accomplished this feat using his free time as he traveled the world for business, fishing during his breaks/time off.

What does this have to do with Creation Inspirations? Plenty! First, it’s yet another example of how there is inspiration all around us. This story, as written,  has nothing to do with God or  faith, but we can find a faith lesson in it without looking very hard.

Just think for a moment, he didn’t catch 1000 fish, but 1000 different kinds of fish. According to the article, he caught common species like perch and tuna but he also caught soapfish, goatfish and a spotted wobbegong (which I am totally going to research, I can’t wait to to see what they look like).

This story is full of Creation Inspiration because I find it nearly impossible to consider that list and not feel a sense of how awesome our Creator God is. He knows each of these fantastic creatures along with the hundreds ore even thousands we know nothing about yet. Also, as weird and strange as they may seem to us, each has its place in the grand scheme of things and God knows how that works too. Again, how awesome is that!

And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” Genesis 1:20 NIV

Remembering Rainbows

  Posted by Cheryl under Uncategorized

Depending on where you live, this summer you might have experienced heavy rain, thunderstorms or even flooding in places where it doesn’t usually flood at all. In addition to that, hurricane season is well underway now in the US and many coastal areas are keeping an eye on those storms. Weather can be scary sometimes.

As Christians we have something that can take at least some of that fear away-God’s promise and covenant that He will never destroy the earth with floods again. He also reminds us with the rainbow:

Bible Verse: Genesis 9:14-15a (NIV) Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind.

After it rains where you are, maybe you’ll see a rainbow, maybe you won’t, but you know what, you can see rainbows in lots of places besides after a storm. Here are just a few ideas to help you remember rainbows:

What You Need:

You’ll need to be able to remember the colors of the rainbow and what order they appear in. Use this memory trick: ROY G BIV which stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

What To Do

Start looking at life with “rainbow eyes”, try to notice where you either see the colors of the rainbow together, or where you can put things together to make the right combination.

Here are some examples to get you started:

A) There is a candy that has the slogan “taste the rainbow.” Hint: it starts with an S. If you eat them, remember the rainbow God sent to Noah.

B) Look in your closet. Can you organize it so that you see a rainbow of clothes? Is there a coat closet in your home? Try it there too.

C) Watch the sun coming through a glass, crystal, or maybe even a fish tank. Sometimes rainbows show up in unexpected places!

BTW, if you like these ideas, each chapter in the book has “un-plugged” activities just like this that you can do with your students/family.
